Geese gone wild ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

It must be the heat! Or, is it that I obsess!  I prefer to think that I'm not obsessing, but rather, reinforcing the process of making four-at-a-time flying geese.  Two toddler size quilts later, I think I've got the hang of it.  My geese blocks measure 3" x 6" making a perfect 36" x 48" delight filled with my left-over fabric scraps.

What I learned in making my second toddler quilt  was that directional fabric must be viewed with a jaundiced eye.

No, I didn't rip, but allowed each block to add interest and in the whole ...

'Tis The Season ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

Any season is good for making a quilt, but especially when the air is cool outside.

I only have a few batik scraps left so decided to reduce them a little bit more by making an Ohio Star quilt...AKA Sawtooth Star by some.  It's a 4 block by 4 block construction simply because that's all the lighter batik background fabric there was in my stash.  It's a good community service size - 48" x 48".  Those stars made big are so easy and finished in no time by making the 2-at-a-time flying geese blocks for the star ...

It's all about the base ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

And the base of it all is that I do enjoy making zippered pouches, especially when I find an unfinished project that can be diverted into one or two or three.

Once upon a time I was quite often asked to make presentations to quilt guilds in the area so I always kept a project in the back of my mind for a presentation.  So, that's where this story begins....now, where does it end.

In my ongoing pursuit to downsize, I found some swatches of pojagi stitching (how it's done) by machine and decided they would make ...

Wait~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

Still going drawer by drawer, shelf by shelf, closet by closet, room by room.

I stacked those zippers aside to pack up for my next haul to the thrift store.  But wait!

Stopping to break for fresh air, and while happily zipping through my instagram favorites one of which is Bookhou, I discovered that I most definitely had a use for those zippers......all 14 of them.

My first one for the test drive and modifications if needed:

With just a  few scraps and a few zippers:   there you have it, little nothing pouches to donate to children in need ...

It's a Sunday Morning in May ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

And a happy Sunday morning it is - a happy Mother's Day here in the U.S.  While I've never had children, I am certainly enjoying the day.

To celebrate the day, I spoke with my sisters about their beautiful children and afterward reminisced about some of our mother's antics when she was here with us.

I made a doll quilt for community service...there's always a child out there who plays mother to her dearest baby doll.

From orphan blocks and fabric - a doll quilt - 18" x 20"

Lucky for me I had two orphan blocks ...

I really didn't desert my blog ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

But, I say, things just get in the way.   I was a happy camper this week, saying goodbye to ten little quilts made for community service.  They are out of the house and in the hands of those in need.  Some might have already been shared with you, but after quilting and binding, washing and drying all of them this past week, I thought I'd give one last glimpse of what can be done with a few scraps and left overs.

Three of my favorites using Kaffe Fassett fat quarters to make large triangles. So easy to cut and ...

It's been a busy summer ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

"I will not participate in the hate-filled political environment"  has become my mantra.  Of course, I keep informed and feel comfortable about who I will be giving my vote to.  But believe me when I say that your rants and raves and hate filled comments will not sway me into believing your truths.

What I am participating in is keeping myself occupied this summer doing what I can to help ease the hurt and pain of some.  Pictured are a few quilts that have been delivered to those in need.   I'd rather be building rather than tearing down.

Delightfully ...

Another One Finished and Gone ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

Oh, how lucky am I to have the freedom to sew and donate to those in need.  This is just one of 15 quilts  delivered to CASA headquarters this morning.     Making quilts for others is a much more enjoyable way to spend time than getting into debates  over the who, what, when, where and why....and sometimes how? of  politics.

Keeping it simple, this one is stitched with 5" squares that were donated to me.  Just the right size for a toddler to drag about or cuddle down with.

Who am I? from Marty's Fiber Musings

Many faces, I wear.  But who am I?  Really?   A vulture!

Yes, that was my name for the day a couple of weeks ago.  Why:  because I took away a quilter's fabric to save it from being dumped curbside.  Yes, I did it then and will do it again.  Because I know that when I take, I also give back.  Of the 24 yards + of fabric, I made 24 pillowcases for community service and the remaining yardage went toward quilt backings for the children in need.  Enough.....

The quilting group finally got to meet last Thursday and what a ...

Starting.....Again ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

Why is it that when one thought gets finished, another just pops right in?  Oftentimes the pop-in rudely interrupts the not quite finished previous thought.  What the......?  Can't they wait their turn!

The same is true  in the case of making pillow cases:  one can't get finished before another one just begs for a chance.   When I have a yard of fabric, 27" gets cut for the body of the pillow case.  So I need 9" from another yard for the cuff.   Now I have 27 inches left over from that second yard!   Can you see where this ...

January ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

2020 - a new year, a new decade -  has arrived and January is well in progress.  Some snapshots just to prove the sewing  machine has been humming.

The joyous new year began with the completion of two quilt tops ready for quilting and donated to a child in need.  Just last week I heard a comment made that made my heart hurt.  A lovely quilter, she is, said that she was just about community serviced out.   But for the grace of God, that hurting child could have been me and so it is for that reason that I hope never to ...
